Overview
JPJ administers Malaysia’s vehicle registration and road transport legislation under the Road Transport Act 1987. Before a new vehicle model may be registered and sold, the manufacturer or authorised importer must obtain a Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) — also known as a homologation — demonstrating that the vehicle meets Malaysia’s safety, emissions, and construction requirements.
The process is aligned with UNECE Regulations, with Malaysian-specific deviations documented in JPJ’s technical guidelines. Key areas include crashworthiness, braking performance, lighting, emissions (OBD, Euro 4M/5), and noise.
